Sierra Leone’s New Tunkuliri Project Adopts Sonar Flow Meters

Sierra Leone boasts a unique geological structure and abundant mineral resources, with iron ore serving as the cornerstone of its economic development. In September 2020, Qinghua Investment Co., Ltd. of Sierra Leone took over the Shansteel Sierra Leone Mining Project. The first phase of the project went into operation in March 2021. Since its launch and operation, the project has achieved seamless integration across the entire industrial chain—from mine production to rail transportation and port-based maritime shipping—injecting new momentum into the development of Sierra Leone’s iron ore industry.
Why use a sonar flowmeter for magnetic iron ore?
Electromagnetic flowmeters operate on the principle of Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. When the slurry contains magnetic materials, there will be a significant deviation between the flow velocity measured by the electromagnetic flowmeter and the actual flow velocity. Moreover, this deviation varies depending on changes in the solid content of the slurry or fluctuations in the flow rate—and such deviations are random and unpredictable. As shown in the test conducted by Australia’s FMG company in the figure above, these are the deviation data obtained when an electromagnetic flowmeter measures magnetic slurries.
