Application of Sonar Flow Meters for Long-Distance Transportation of Benxi Nanfen Iron Ore Concentrate

The concentrate‑powder pipeline transportation project at the Nanfen Concentrator of Benxi Mining has been put into operation. The project comprises a concentrate pump station at the upstream end, a filtration system at the downstream end, and a roughly 25‑km iron‑concentrate pipeline connecting the Nanfen Concentrator to Benxi’s Type C stockyard. Nine Pulsar sonar flow meters have been installed along this pipeline.
As pipeline transportation technology for iron ore concentrate continues to advance, traditional rail transport has increasingly revealed drawbacks such as high operating costs, limited capacity, dust emissions during transit, and significant seasonal variability—issues that severely constrain the full realization of production potential in the beneficiation process. In response, Benxi Steel Group and Benxi Mining Company have opted for a green, intelligent, and highly efficient pipeline system for conveying fine‑grade concentrate. Construction on this project commenced on June 1, 2022, with a total investment of RMB 350 million and a pipeline length of 25 kilometers. Upon reaching full design capacity, the facility will be able to handle 5 million tons per year of iron ore concentrate. Meanwhile, Panzhihua Steel’s Baima iron ore concentrate pipeline, spanning 100 kilometers, has been equipped with sonar flow meters for the past 12 years.
In addition to the cases mentioned above, sonic flowmeters have been selected for flow measurement, leak monitoring, and blockage early warning in the following applications: the Baowu–Taigang Yuanjiacun iron concentrate pipeline, the Fengxin–Shidai lithium‑ore tailings pipeline, the Jingcheng iron ore iron concentrate pipeline, the Shougang Macheng iron ore pipeline, and the HBIS Luting steel pipeline.
Long pipeline lengths, complex routing, significant elevation changes, and harsh climatic conditions all pose formidable challenges for long-distance pipelines. Sonar flowmeters deliver precise measurements and reliable operation; after more than a decade of outdoor service with virtually no maintenance, even as rain, snow, wind, and sand have faded their exterior, the continuous stream of data they transmit ensures they remain firmly in the spotlight.
